I'm on a mission to build a $1M solo empire by 2027. No boss. No team. Just me and AI. Here's the story, what I think is coming, and exactly how I'm doing it.

Where I've been

I spent twenty years helping other people build their empires.

As a CFO and adviser, I sat in the rooms where companies got built, sold and rescued. And it always took the same things. A team, an office, a payroll, a board. If you wanted something big, you needed a lot of people.

What changed

Then I built an app on my own. The first one took six months. The next one took a fortnight.

That's when it hit me. The thing that used to need a whole team doesn't any more.

One person, working with AI, can now build the product, reach the audience and run the whole thing.

What's coming

So here's my bet. Over the next few years, the people worth following stop renting space on other people's platforms and build their own world. The same way everyone ended up with a website. The ones who go first will own their patch.

I'm betting my next two years on it. In public, with the numbers on show.

Disney's map

It's actually a very old idea. In 1957 Walt Disney sketched his business as a map, and every piece fed every other. The film sold the toys. The TV show sold the park. The park sold the records.

But running it took three things only a giant could afford. The same three that stop most people starting anything.

Cheap distribution gave us creators. AI gives us solo empires.

So how does one person actually pull it off? Three things. Here's how I'm doing each one.

The first problem

Doing it all yourself, every single day, when nobody's making you.

Here's what nobody tells you about working for yourself. The hard part isn't the work. It's the voice in your head.

The one that says be sensible. Wait until you're ready. Maybe one day. It never sounds like an enemy. It sounds reasonable, and it's usually someone who loves you.

The life you want isn't delusional. It's just unmapped.

If one person has done it, it's possible. What you really doubt is whether it's possible for you. So we don't shrink the dream to make it sensible. We keep the big version and put a map on it.

I call it manifestation, but real. You find what you look for. Picture the life clearly and you start noticing the openings you were walking straight past. That's not magic, it's just how attention works. But the picture only counts once it points you at something to do today.

So every night you ask one question. Was it a Wonday? A day you actually moved. Then you do it again tomorrow. The dream gets won one day at a time, until one day it's just your life.

What AI does for me here
It's my PA, my accountant, my lawyer and my editor. Every job I'd otherwise have to hire for, done before breakfast. That's what makes a staff of one possible.

And here's what surprised me. The climb gives you something worth saying. Which is the second A ↓

The second problem

Audience

People who actually want to follow what you're doing.

Somebody who has climbed has something to say. Somebody who hasn't, doesn't, however good their camera is. That's why the climb comes first.

But most people with something to say never say it. Or they say it in a voice that isn't really theirs.

You're not too odd. You're not odd enough.

Fear doesn't make you quiet. It makes you the same as everyone else. Scroll any feed and every video sounds identical, because safe is what we were all taught.

And now AI is flooding the world with perfect, polished, faceless content. Polish isn't rare any more. The one thing it can never fake is you. The bits you've been hiding are exactly the bits people would follow.

The trouble is you can't become odd in public. Public punishes odd long before it rewards it. You need somewhere to practise first. Everyone else teaches you to perform. This is the one place you're allowed to rehearse.

What AI does for me here
It edits my videos and helps me post them, so one person can be everywhere without a content team. I just have to show up and be me.

But a movement on someone else's platform is just a following. It needs somewhere to live. Which is the third A ↓

The third problem

Assets

A place of your own, where your people gather and belong.

"Assets" sounds cold. It isn't what I mean. The most valuable thing you can own is a place where your people come together.

Think about the pub, the club, the church hall. The place that was neither home nor work, where you were known. Most of those have emptied out. Social media moved in and failed at the job, because it gave people a stadium when what they'd lost was a room.

People don't stay for content. They stay for each other.

Right now, every community platform is a block of rented flats. Same building, same corridors, same doors. You can paint yours one of six colours, and every other business in the building looks exactly like yours.

So why would you rent a flat when you can build a house? One that feels like you from the moment someone walks in. Your language, your rituals, the way you actually teach. A place your people open every day because it's theirs as much as yours.

And it can be anything you can picture:
